Darryl David praat met Naomi Meyer oor vanjaar se Adam Small-fees, wat op 24 tot 26 Februarie in Pniël plaasvind.

Darryl David chats to Naomi Meyer about this year’s Adam Small Festival, taking place in Pniël from 24 to 26 February 2023.

Darryl, amper tyd vir die Adam Small-fees in Pniël. Waneer is dit en waarna kan feesgangers vanjaar uitsien?

This year, we have a wonderful blend of local and nationwide writers from all over South Africa. We are proud to host Ashwin Arendse, winner of the UJ Prize for Best Debut for his anthology, Swatland. And Sunday Times Prize winner Mignonne Breier for her remarkable book, Bloody Sunday.

We are also extremely excited to have the much loved Cradock Afrikaans poet Clinton V du Plessis in Pniël with his just-launched anthology of poetry, 60 op 60. In fact, Clinton turned 60 just at the beginning of this week. We are also extremely proud to have Joanne Joseph in Stellenbosch with her highly acclaimed debut novel, Children of sugarcane. But there are so many wonderful books at this year’s festival, including Julian Jansen’s Moord op Stellenbosch, Bridget Pitt’s highly anticipated Eye brother horn and Lester Walbrugh with his novel, Elton Baatjies

Truly, it is a line-up to savour.

Afrikaans in sy diversiteit op die program. Watter skrywers in verskillende variëteite van Afrikaans is daar te siene?

Our festival is hosted by the Pniël Congregational Church, and let me say that as far as Afrikaans dialects go – in my father’s house, there are many mansions.

The festival will always be the home of Kaaps, as can be seen by writers like Grant Jefthas, Gaireyah Fredericks, Diana Ferrus, Ashwin Arendse – die mengelmoes skrywers. Why, we even have a work with Arabic on the programme. Not to mention the many English authors!

What about music and food?

This year, through the generous sponsorship of organisations like ATKV and Vriende van Afrikaans, we are also able to offer wonderful entertainment every evening.

On Friday, we have a concert by the Afrikaaps artist Jitsvinger; and on Saturday, an ATKV Crescendo production, Klawerjas, an ode to Adam Small.

What are the practicalities for the festival? Costs of the tickets, where is Pniël and where in Pniël is the festival taking place?

The Adam Small Boekefees is held at the Pniël Museum and Pniël Congregational Church. It is on the breathtakingly beautiful Helshoogte Pass. The grounds at the museum are truly magnificent, lying in the fold of those majestic mountains.

All talks are free, because we want to open the festival to everyone. However, the music concerts carry a nominal fee. See programme.
