The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is pleased to announce the recipient of the prestigious 2023 UJ Prize for Translation.

Gaan Suid-Afrika die Wêreldrugbybeker met een punt wen? Jaco Jacobs waag voorspellings en praat oor sy vertaling van Rassie Erasmus se outobiografie. "Dit is regtig ’n lekker boek om te lees. Ek het op ’n dag vir my pa gesê: 'Die rede waarom ek nie juis rugby kyk nie, is dat daar nie ’n storielyn is nie.' Toe antwoord hy: 'Dis omdat jy nie die karakters ken nie.' Met die vertaling van hierdie boek voel dit of ek ’n hele klomp van die karakters leer ken het."

Johann Kotzé is pas aangestel as hoof- uitvoerende beampte van Agri SA. Freek Robinson vra hom hoe hy boere in Suid-Afrika teen politieke inmenging gaan beskerm.

"Sowat 12 jaar gelede het ek ’n buitengewone geskenk vir Kersfees gekry. ’n Volbloedhartaanval volledig toegerus met ingeboude fibrillasies en slagaarembolismes."

Daar kan weer aansoek gedoen word vir die Van Ewijck-Stigting se  Prestasie-prys van R75 000. Dit is ’n prys vir bewese prestasies wat reeds gelewer is en verband hou met die doelstellings van die Stigting, wat kulturele betrekkinge tussen Suid-Afrika en Nederland in die ruimste sin bevorder. Dit sluit alle vertakkinge van die kunste en wetenskap in.

"Creating the conditions where this kind of multilingualism is fostered involves commitment, leadership in education policy, and an understanding that the long-term benefits of such an approach are worth the time, cost and effort, because it will contribute to social cohesion, individual well-being and the development of new opportunities for speakers."
