Persverklaring: Aansoeke vir Jakes Gerwel Stigting se skrywershuis oop

  • 0

Young playwrights encouraged to create

The Jakes Gerwel Foundation and the Suidoosterfees support and encourage emerging playwrights to be creative, especially in the current climate of uncertainty. Promising young playwrights are offered an exceptional opportunity – participation in a mentorship programme that will see their plays polished and perfected under professional guidance.

The foundation and the festival are dedicated to developing and promoting young talent, therefore this initiative is aimed at playwrights on the threshold of their careers and new to the industry.

Abduragman Adams, television and film actor best known for his role in the kykNET soapie Suidooster, will act as mentor. Adams is also active as director, playwright and drama lecturer.

Young playwrights who would like to participate in this programme, are invited to submit a new play, or an excerpt, together with a CV, to Theo Kemp, executive director of the Jakes Gerwel Foundation, at theo@jgf.org.za by 26 June 2020.

Existing work that has already been performed will not be considered.

In September successful candidates will enjoy a three-week writer’s residency at Paulet House in Somerset East, where the Jakes Gerwel Foundation is situated. The house with its old-world charm, spacious rooms, elegant living areas and lush garden, provides the ideal environment for uninterrupted writing. Travel and accommodation expenses of successful candidates, as well as meals, will be covered by the foundation.

Building on the late professor Gerwel’s passion and vision, this project offers mentorship to talented individuals who would not have had the opportunity otherwise. The foundation was founded with the purpose to honour the legacy of Jakes Gerwel, who excelled as an educator, liberator, patron of the arts and astute businessman. The foundation and the festival joined hands to promote inclusivity in the arts, and to commemorate the instrumental role Gerwel played in establishing the Suidoosterfees.

After Professor Gerwel’s death, his widow Phoebé donated his beloved Paulet House to the foundation, with the idea to turn it into a writers’ residence.

Texts of the participating playwrights will, after completion of the mentorship programme, be considered for stage production at next year’s Suidoosterfees.
