I play the outspoken cousin Fairuz, a modest mommy blogger/influencer of the family who is ever ready with fashion advice and can read the family dynamics. Her outward expression is extremely well put together, her judgements severe, and yet there is still something surprising to discover about her.

Ek het by ’n aktrise gehoor as mens ’n rol vertolk, moet mens net diep in jouself grawe, en daardie dinge waarna jy soek vir jou karakter, is ook in jou. Was dit jou gevoel toe jy hierdie karakter gespeel het? Dat jy diep moes grawe of dat jy baie soos jou karakter dink en is? Wat was vir jou die lekkerste en wat was die uitdagendste aspekte van jou karakter?

I'm not like Fairuz at all, and so learning from Quanita’s perspective was very helpful in grounding her for me. But ultimately what helped me uncover Fairuz and all my characters in general, was working to discover our shared humanity. People are like poetry, which I adore – they contain so many exquisite ambiguities, so I use the layers as the foundation to expand and interpret from. And of course I rely on the writer’s and director’s clues and insights.

What was daunting was playing this outspoken, almost tactless character without making her one-dimensional. And having the guts to fully embody that thick-skinned, kind and unapologetic persona was really fun and challenging. But I’ve got to let my “judgerag” freak flag fly!

I'm looking forward to slowing down amidst the need to be social during this festive season. I'll be spending quality time at some of my favourite sacred spaces in and around my home town of Stellenbosch, prioritising time for prayer, gratitude, meditation and the people I love. And I am also fortunate to be doing some travelling with my family in the new year – a little bit of island time which I'm so excited for!
