Kan mense genees word deur stories? Watter gevare moet joernaliste oorleef om die waarheid te ontdek? Hoe beïnvloed korrupsie die mense op grondvlak?
Die jaarlikse Open Book Festival het van Woensdag 4 September tot Sondag 8 September 2019 in Kaapstad plaasgevind. Verskeie aktuele gesprekke het tydens die fees plaasgevind.

Afrikaaps & Healing-gesprek
Op Woensdag 4 September het Quentin Williams met Blaq Pearl, Emile YX? en Jitsvinger oor lesse van eiewaarde deur middel van Afrikaaps gesels. Die paneel het ook moontlike oplossings vir bendegeweld op die Kaapse Vlakte deur die gebruik van Afrikaaps in gemeenskapsprojekte bespreek.

These are the things that sit with us-gesprek
“Emosioneel, hartroerend, treffend,” skryf Bettina Wyngaard op haar Facebook-blad oor die paneelbespreking van These are the things that sit with us. Op Woensdag 4 September het Bettina met die samesteller, Friederike Bubenzer, en bydraers van die boek: Russell Cupido, Fatima Dike en Phillip Voegt, gesels.

“What was the impact of apartheid on the lives of South Africans? How are people living with painful memories in their day-to-day lives? ... These are some of the questions that are explored in a new book titled These are the things that sit with us, edited by Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela, Friederike Bubenzer and Marietjie Oelofsen ... Working with a group of researchers, the editors compiled a collection of short stories of the enduring impact of experiences of apartheid from people living with the memory of this past in Langa, Bonteheuwel and Worcester.
The book makes visible undocumented everyday experiences that shaped the lives of ordinary South Africans during the country’s brutal and painful past. It is a record of things that ‘sit’ within all of us. By sharing their memories, the storytellers map the scope of the wider, and difficult, conversation about the meaning of justice and the missing parts of the discourse of reconciliation in South Africa. It creates a space for a conversation about South Africa’s history and what it means to talk to and to hear the other within the context of this history.”

Hoe voel dit om in jou bekende grootvader se skaduwee te leef? Hoe skep jy jou eie identiteit? Wat beteken hierdie betekenisvolle naam in hedendaagse konteks? Op Donderdag 5 September het Ndileka Mandela en Wilhelm Verwoerd saam met John Maytham gesels oor hoe hulle, hul eie paadjie wil stap – weg van hul oupa’s, Nelson Mandela en Hendrik Verwoerd, se nalatenskap.

Dirty Politics-gesprek met
Foeta Krige, Caryn Dolley en Pieter-Louis Myburgh
Dreigemente. Agtervolging. Elke beweging wat jy maak, word dopgehou. Wat is die prys wat joernaliste op soek na die waarheid betaal? Hierdie was die tema wat op Vrydag 6 September tydens die Dirty Politics-gesprek onder die loep gekom het. Die joernalis, Erin Bates, het met Foeta Krige (skrywer van The SABC8), Caryn Dolley (skrywer van The Enforcers: Inside Cape Town’s deadly nightclub battles) en Pieter-Louis Myburgh (skrywer van Gangster State) gesels.
