  • So Ma'am, as some called her, is no more.

With her passing an era comes to a close during which she was ever present.
I read all the tributes to her by heads of State, celebrities and everyday people and it shows how embedded her life was in the lives of just about everyone.
She did what was expected of her as a sovereign and never let the side down.

That's to say if you were on their side.

My views on royalty worldwide and in general are known.
To me they resemble a fantasy not unlike a big-budget Disney movie starring unlikely characters that somehow triumph over evil and for a few hours makes you feel that all is well and life is good.
But then you step outside the cinema or your living room and reality slowly returns when fantasy disappears and the cold realness of life hits you.

In a modern, technologically driven world the thought, that kings and queens are still present and influence the lives of millions, is quite staggering.
It's like wearing your old safari-suit or honeycomb hairstyle and expecting the world of fashion to applaud.
In a word, the royals are an anachronism, an outdated concept that hangs around regardless of what our better judgment tells us.
Like Superman who continues to inspire and entertain viewers who know full well that it's fiction and mere escapism.

But, the Royals like Disney is part of a huge industry and while they are entertaining the masses they bring in lots of lolly, you say.
True, depending on which royals you refer to, but mostly they take other people's money to finance their own lavish lifestyles and to perpetuate their own dreams.
The difference being that their dreams come true while the fanciful dream of many children (and adults) who wish to become a prince or a princess, don't.

It's a very strange thing and not unlike the Stockholm syndrome where you trust and even revere your captors. Regardless.
