On 1 March 2020, after nearly a decade of running The Fugard Theatre, Managing Director and Producer Daniel Galloway will step down from running the theatre to pursue independent producing projects, and the current Fugard Theatre Manager and Co-producer, Lamees Albertus, will assume the role of General Manager and Producer of The Fugard Theatre.

Lamees Albertus joined The Fugard Theatre nearly ten years ago as Daniel Galloway’s very first team member when he joined The Fugard as General Manager and established a new management at The Fugard. Albertus started at The Fugard as the office assistant and has risen impressively over the years to establish herself as a formidable and highly respected Co-Producer and Theatre Manager.

“Daniel Galloway leaves big shoes to fill. What a challenge and a great honour. I am overwhelmed but equally excited to take on this new role and opportunity alongside our Artistic Director Greg Karvellas and with the incredibly passionate Fugard team. My vision as General Manager is to continue to find ways to make The Fugard sustainable while staging world-class work – championing inclusivity and our common humanity, with a central focus on commissioning new writing from South Africans telling our stories. We thank and salute Daniel for his extraordinary achievement at The Fugard over almost a decade and look forward to working with him on individual productions.” – Lamees Albertus, General Manager and Producer.

“The Fugard Theatre is taking a very big step in its evolution and there is no better person suited to take on the position of General Manager and Producer of The Fugard Theatre than Lamees Albertus. Lamees and I have grown up together at the Fugard under Daniel’s tenacious leadership and I am looking forward working side by side with Lamees in her new position.” – Greg Karvellas, Artistic Director of The Fugard Theatre.

The first play which Daniel Galloway will produce as a consulting producer, for The Fugard Theatre, will be Athol Fugard and Paula Fourie’s latest play which will enjoy a short season in Stellenbosch in April 2020. All details to be announced soon.

“I would never have thought that I would have had the opportunity to run – for almost a decade – The Fugard Theatre and, together with an incredibly passionate team, establish The Fugard as a front runner in theatre-making and producing on our continent. I am incredibly proud of the manner in which The Fugard has made and produced theatre and I am equally grateful to Eric for his unwavering support of theatre in South Africa under extremely challenging circumstances. It has been an honour and a profound privilege to have the responsibility of Managing Director and Producer for The Fugard and I look forward to working with The Fugard, in a different capacity in  time to come. Lamees has my full and utmost confidence and I could not be prouder of handing over the reins to her and watching her flourish in her new capacity for The Fugard with the incredible team behind her. Thank you team Fugard. Thank you, Eric.” – Daniel Galloway

“This is what The Fugard is about. Giving opportunities to those with talent on and off the stage to rise and flourish. Our Artistic Director, Greg Karvellas started as a barman! I am very grateful to Daniel Galloway for his inexhaustible enthusiasm, boundless energy and hard work in establishing The Fugard Theatre as a significant theatre in this city and in South Africa. He takes his place in this country’s theatre history. I have absolute confidence in Lamees’ ability to take up the baton and, with Artistic Director Greg Karvellas and the dedicated Fugard team, consolidate what Daniel started.” – Eric Abraham, Founding Producer and Benefactor of the Fugard Theatre.
