The Heritage Travel Magazine: Mondig international poetry competition at the 21st Suidoosterfees

Since Suidoosterfees is a festival for all and celebrating their 21st birthday, we decided to include every household in the world from different nations, cultures and towns to give everyone the opportunity to be a part of it by joining in on this international poetry competition. This initiative is created so that South Africans living abroad, around the country in other provinces and local communities that are not able to attend the festival in person will not miss out!

Competition opens 26 April and closes 1 May 2024.

Participants stand a chance to win book prizes sponsored by die SA Akademie van Wetenskap en Kuns and also a chance for their poem to be published in Heritage Travel Magazine.

The themes are:

  • My town / my school: It can be a poem about your hometown, the town you live in or any town in the world that you love or have an interest in /OR your school
  • Afrikaans: A poem written in Afrikaans language, the poem can be about anything.
  • Liberation: 30 years of democracy 1994-2024 in South Africa: How do you perceive and experience 30 years democracy?

Entries may be in any language from around the world, but must include an English or Afrikaans translation of the poem(s).

Entry is R50 and open to everyone in the world. You can send up to 3 poems.

Celebrate your heritage; let’s honour our towns. This is how we keep intangible cultural heritage going and building bridges through literature, connecting with each other and keeping economic growth, tourism growth, literature, art and culture, heritage and human dignity alive.
