Nathan Robinson chats to Naomi Meyer about his food and film event at this year’s Aardklop Arts Festival.
.........
We have glimpses of some of my favourite foodie movies and some other fundamental chef movies, too. I’ll be demonstrating and cooking some dishes that will be paired with good wines. All of this will be enjoyed from a set long table for our guests.

Nathan, you studied advanced kitchen management and patisserie, and now you are teaching at the Chef’s Academy in Potchefstroom. Am I right? Please elaborate.
That’s correct, yes. After studying, I was fortunate enough to be employed as an executive chef (I was 20 years old at the time), and I’ve held that title ever since then. When I came to the Roots, I was offered the same position, but with a little challenge added to the title: also teaching the practical classes for the chef students at the Potchefstroom Chef Academy.
The academy was fairly small then, only three students, so I accepted the challenge! It’s been five years since then; we’ve grown tremendously in our number of students, and so has my love for teaching and being a chef lecturer. Not only do I get to live out my passion for being creative and cooking, but I also get to pass a little of that down to all our future chefs at the academy.
Recently, due to programmes like The Bear, cooking and the kitchen can be watched on the (small) screen. But food has always been an interesting component of certain movies. What movies for foodies are your personal favourites?
Being in this industry is quite time-consuming, so I don’t really get that much time for watching TV, but when it comes to foodie movies, I have a few favourites. Julie and Julia is one of them; Julia Child is someone who played an important role in culinary history, and Meryl Streep portrays her character, so you know it’s phenomenal.
The 100-foot journey is also one of my favourites. It focuses on some culinary and cultural differences when it comes to cuisine, and it’s definitely worth watching.
What are you planning for the Silwerdoekdisse event at Aardklop this year? What can people expect when they buy tickets for this event?

I am no chef, but I do know that planning is very important when it comes to serving people with the best dishes. Please share some of your own thoughts on what is important for a chef - and what needs to be planned for this specific event at Aardklop?
.........
I can’t speak for all chefs, but for me personally, it’s important to make people happy through food. I’m a creative person and I enjoy telling stories through the dishes I prepare.

I can’t speak for all chefs, but for me personally, it’s important to make people happy through food. I’m a creative person and I enjoy telling stories through the dishes I prepare. Planning is crucial; there is a lot of logistics and preparation that goes into an event like this, especially when there is a time limit. Fortunately, I’m part of a well-organised team at the Roots, which makes my life a whole lot easier!
What are the details of this event? Where will it take place and where can people buy the tickets?
It will be held in the Garden Room at the Roots Lifestyle Centre. Tickets are available at the Aardklop offices at the Roots venue and also online at Ticketpro.
