PEN Afrikaans and PEN Ukraine are both part of PEN International. PEN Afrikaans hereby shares important information from our fellow PEN centre to combat the disinformation and propaganda prevalent on the social media.

PEN Ukraine appeals to international PEN centres and fellow writers, journalists and intellectuals.

Now it is important to tell the truth about the Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and appeal for support of parliaments and governments in the world.

What is going on?
  • Russia attacked Ukraine on the morning of February 24. Rockets were fired onto several military facilities and airfields. Dozens of civilians were also killed in residential buildings and civilian buildings. At the same time military equipment entered Ukrainian territory from Russia, Belarus and the previously occupied territories of Ukraine – parts of Luhansk and Crimea.
  • The Ukrainian army repulses the aggressor. Ukrainian society is more united than ever, helping the army and supporting people forced to flee the war zone. Now the Russian regime is shelling Kyiv, Kharkiv, Sumy, Kherson and other Ukrainian settlements. Among the facilities seized by the Russian army is the infamous Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
What can you do for Ukraine right now?

To demand that Western leaders like German Chancellor Scholz, French President Macron, US President Biden, and British Prime Minister Johnson:

  • Cut off Russia from SWIFT;
  • Protect Ukrainian airspace;
  • Send NATO troops to Ukraine.
Why is this important?
  • By cutting off Russia from SWIFT, we significantly weaken the enemy.
  • By "closing" the airspace over Ukraine, ie ensuring its security, the West is drastically changing the balance of power in Ukraine. At the moment, Ukrainian soldiers are winning on land but losing in the air.
  • By sending a NATO military contingent to Ukraine, there is a chance to end the war. The only language Putin understands is POWER!
