Onthou warm klere, ’n kombers of kussing, flits asook ʼn masker.

The Afrikaans Language Museum and Monument (ATM) concludes this year's human rights month with a unique outdoor picnic concert during which Paarl's music stars will entertain guests with a variety of genres. This one-off show takes place on Sunday evening, 28 March 2021, in celebration of the country's internationally acclaimed human rights charter, of which language rights are a part of, and is in aid of the Let's Read! literacy project for children, whose right to education is also enshrined in legislation.

To promote Afrikaans and multilingualism, Carl Hendricks, Clarissa Benjamin, Deon Valor, Hiram Hartogh, Marco Mentoor and Nosipho H, among others, will impress the visitors on the lush green lawns with a wide choice of songs before the main performance with Cheswyn Ruiters - winner of 2019's 'Maak my Famous' competition - reaches a grand finale. It promises to be a wonderful autumn evening with jazz, classical and R&B, among others.

According to the ATM's director, Michael Jonas, the aim with this event is not only to give exposure to local artists, who have been severely affected by the covid-19 pandemic, but also remind residents and tourists that the beautiful monument is a living institution. “Visitors can also take the opportunity to view this unique, symbol-laden sculpture. We encourage guests to explore the area and they also have access to secure parking, a shuttle service, outdoor games, children's playgrounds as well as a writing exhibition where new Arabic-Afrikaans works are currently on display,” he says. Furthermore, the evening is in aid of the ATM's literacy project, so guests are invited to donate any children's books for this purpose.

Those interested will have to buy tickets via Computicket as soon as possible as only 200 will be available at only R50 per adult (free for children under 13). Gates open at 17:00 and the show starts at 18:00 in the Garden Theatre - just in time for a lovely sunset and moonrise. Guests can bring their own picnic baskets and drinks (no glass) or support the mobile kiosk, which sells refreshments and beverages. Unfortunately, no dogs or fires are allowed. Remember warm clothes, a blanket or pillow, torch as well as a mask. See www.taalmuseum.co.za/covid-19/ for the specific protocols.

For more information on these and other exciting events as well as (online) courses, call 021 863 0543/4809 or visit www.taalmonument.co.za and www.facebook.com/afrikaansetaalmonument. Year permits are available at R120 for individuals or R220 per family (currently offered at a 20% discount), which includes access to all Full Moon Picnics. The language monument and language museum are open to visitors.
