Kursus sal nóg boekdele spreek oor herstelwerk
Taalmonument bied gevorderde klasse oor boekherstel en -bindery
Kort op die hakke van ’n hoogs suksesvolle inleidende kursus oor die herstel van boeke, bied die Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument (ATM) in die Paarl weer ’n kursus – met die kollig op gevorderde tegnieke soos leerbind- en bladgoudwerk – vanaf 2 tot 4 Oktober 2023 aan. Dié kursus van die dinamiese en gewilde George Wentzel, ’n gekwalifiseerde meesterboekbinder met meer as 46 jaar se ondervinding, is geskik vir beginners én deelnemers wat reeds basiese boek- en papierherstelwerk onder die knie het.
Hierdie kenner het voorheen in die Nasionale Biblioteek van Suid-Afrika se boekbewaringsafdeling gewerk en is altyd geesdriftig om hierdie skaars vaardigheid aan andere te onderrig. Danksy sy vele toekennings en die aanbied van meer as 50 rampbestuur- en boekbindwerkwinkels dwarsoor die land, is hy ongetwyfeld ’n bron van teoretiese en praktiese kennis.
Tydens die tweetalige driedagkursus sal deelnemers onder meer drie boeke maak, Solanderbokse bou, stikwerk van bladsye doen en baie meer oor boekherstelwerk leer. Ingesluit is basiese konsepte, werksprosedures asook demonstrasies van en praktiese oefeninge in skutblaaie, boekbindwerk, leerbindwerk, omhulsel afronding en bladrugsteun.
“Ek beveel hierdie kursus aan vir mense wat graag meer wil leer oor boekherstel,” het een deelnemer, Colleen Chatt, rakende die inleidende kursus in Junie 2021 gesê.
“Die kursus het my inspirasie gegee om voort te gaan met iets nuuts en opwindends,” het ’n ander deelnemer, Angelo Carelse, bygevoeg.
Die kursusfooi beloop R2 000 per persoon, wat ’n sertifikaat van bywoning en ’n stel basiese gereedskap/materiaal insluit. Die werkswinkel vind daagliks vanaf 09:00 tot 15:30 by die Taalmonument plaas. Verversings is ingesluit, maar deelnemers moet sorg vir hul eie etes, of die bistro ondersteun waar hulle ’n 15%-afslag ontvang. Hard on the heels of a highly successful introductory course on book restoration, the Afrikaans Language Museum and Monument (ATM) in Paarl once again offers a course – focused on advanced techniques such as leather binding and gold-foiling – from 2 to 4 October 2023. This course by the dynamic and popular George Wentzel, a qualified master bookbinder with more than 46 years of experience, is suitable for beginners and participants who already have a grasp of basic book and paper repair work.
This expert previously worked in the National Library of South Africa’s book conservation section; his passion is teaching this scarce skill to others. Thanks to his many awards and the presentation of more than 50 disaster management and bookbinding workshops across the country, he is undoubtedly a fountain of theoretical and practical knowledge.
During the three-day, bilingual course participants will amongst others create three books each, construct Solander boxes, sew flat sheets and learn a lot more about repairing books. Included are basic concepts, working procedures as well as demonstrations of and practical exercises in end papering, binding, leather binding, casing rounding and backing.
“I would recommend it to everyone interested in book repairs,” said one participant, Colleen Chatt, regarding the introductory course in June 2021.
“The course gave me inspiration to move forward with something new and exciting,” added another participant, Angelo Carelse.
The course fee, including a certificate of attendance and basic tool kit/material, is R2 000 per person and the workshop takes place from 09:00 to 15:30 daily at the Taalmonument. Refreshments are included, but participants should bring their own lunch or support the bistro, which offers a 15%-discount.
