The Open Book Youth Festival takes place from 13 to 20 March 2024.
Bianca Flanders talks to Naomi Meyer about Bianca’s book event at this year’s Open Book Youth Festival.
Bianca, you studied drama and performance arts, but now you are the author of a series of children’s books. Please would you tell our readers about your journey?
............
I’ve always loved storytelling, and at first it was on stage, then in film. I’ve always loved reading and have wanted to try my hand at writing a book, which is just storytelling in another medium.

I’ve always loved storytelling, and at first it was on stage, then in film. I’ve always loved reading and have wanted to try my hand at writing a book, which is just storytelling in another medium. It’s been so wonderful to explore storytelling in this way. I still work in theatre and film, and I feel like the different mediums all speak to each other, in a way.
What books did you read when you were young, and which ones made an impression?
I absolutely loved Roald Dahl and Harry Potter. I loved the magic in those books; they really inspire the thought that “anything is possible”, and I think that’s special. Jacqueline Wilson was also another firm favourite of mine.
Do you think it is important for a child to read a book in which he/she can identify with the main character?
.............
Representation really matters. When you see yourself represented on film or in books, I feel that it sends the message that you are worthy and your stories are worthy of being told. You belong in this world. You are seen.

I do! Representation really matters. When you see yourself represented on film or in books, I feel that it sends the message that you are worthy and your stories are worthy of being told. You belong in this world. You are seen.
Why write books for youngsters?
I ignorantly thought that writing a children’s book would be a simple place to start; I was wrong! Writing kids’ books is hard, because you have to be concise and you can’t write “down” to them. Kids are also the most honest audience, so if they don’t like something, they’ll let you know! I also feel that children’s books are often where we form our ideas about the world, and I wanted to make a difference. I feel like if I could save a child from having some of the struggles that I had, if I could help them build their confidence, then I would’ve done something good.
What is the importance of a book festival like Open Book for an author like you?
I love the Open Book Festival! It’s such a celebration of local writers and storytelling. I feel like it also encourages more people to buy books and support South African authors. We have exceptional writers, and I’m grateful for a platform like Open Book that can celebrate and explore their work.
