Bespreek dus asseblief voortydig by Elsabé Pearce op ontvangs@taalmuseum.co.za of 021 863 0543 teen 24 Mei.

Taalmonument celebrates Museum Day with unique panel discussion

The Afrikaans Language Museum and Monument (ATM) celebrates International Museum Day on 29 May 2021 with an extremely interesting panel discussion on this year's theme, “The Future of Museums: Recover and Reimagine”.

The panel currently consists of Beverley Thomas of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), Bertdene Laubscher, manager of the Transport Drivers Museum in Ceres, Carike Heydenrych, Drakenstein Local Tourism Association's marketing manager of Paarl & Wellington Wine and Tourism, as well as the experienced museum and heritage consultant Helen Joannides.

Given the impact that the Covid-19 pandemic has also had on museums worldwide, the emphasis will be on how the institutions’ offerings can be reimagined and their cyber footprints expanded to spread more information via the internet and thus attract more e-visitors.

Thomas is the director of the Amazwi South African Museum of Literature in Makhanda and has served, and still does, in various museum organisations. Laubscher has been working at the Transport Drivers Museum since 1996 - which highlights, among other things, the rich (pre)history of Ceres - and she is known for her enthusiasm for the community and museum. Joannides founded the Western Cape Museum Educator Group in 2010, of which she is the chair. This group provides professional development and networking opportunities to educators in museums and other experiential learning environments.

The unique talk will take place on Saturday, 29 May, at the monument from 10:00 to 12:00. Coffee, tea and light refreshments will be served, and guests will be able to ask questions or make comments. Attendance is free, but due to Covid-19 only 50 guests are allowed. Please book timeously with Elsabé Pearce on ontvangs@taalmuseum.co.za or 021 863 0543 by 24 May.

Every year since 1977, the International Council on Museums has organised International Museum Day, which represents a unique moment for the international museum community. On this day, participating museums host creative events and activities related to the theme, engage with their public and highlight the importance of the role of museums as institutions that serve society and its development. See www.imd.icom.museum for more information.

For further information on these and other exciting events, (online) courses and Covid-19 protocols, call 021 863 0543/4809 or visit www.taalmonument.co.za and www.facebook.com/afrikaansetaalmonument. Year permits are available at R120 for individuals or R220 per family (currently offered at a 20% discount), which includes access to all Full Moon Picnics. THE LANGUAGE MONUMENT AND LANGUAGE MUSEUM ARE OPEN TO VISITORS – CHILDREN UNDER 18 CURRENTLY ENTER FOR FREE.
