On Sunday, 5 December more than 500 people met at Surfer’s Corner on Beach Road in Muizenberg to protest against seismic blasting off the South African coast.
Protesters were urged to “Wear blue, bring posters, be creative with blue face paint and share your message.”
The idea was to speak out against the devastation of marine life that offshore oil and gas exploration will bring.
The organisers met an hour earlier to help protesters make their own posters. Cardboard and paint were provided.
A giant snoek and whale puppets, as well as performers, joined the protest.
This was a peaceful protest, and all COVID-19 protocols applied. Protesters were urged always to wear a mask and to keep their distance from other protesters.
An appeal for further action: Remember: Anyone can spread the message by sharing this story. You too can make a difference. No contribution is too small – every little bit helps the cause!
