It is about a dysfunctional family with the central character being a 16-year-old girl who carries the twin burdens of keeping a deep family secret and blame for a family tragedy. These make her play out and challenge various authority figures in her life and in so doing raises questions about prevailing values, worldviews and ideas.
Hoekom moet ek dit gaan kyk?
It has a highly talented, young cast. There is a wonderful District 9-type set which is used innovatively. Brink Scholtz directs it with great creativity. And if the response from the dress rehearsal audience is anything to go by, it is engrossing, provocative and entertaining.
Is daar ’n lewe vir so ’n toneelstuk buite Aardklop? Buite die feeste?
I’m the Associate Playwright at Artscape, so they would be interested in hosting it. I’d also be keen to take it to other theatres and perhaps either do it in English or do it in Afrikaans with English subtitles, as with Die Generaal, my previous work at Aardklop – I think it works a lot better in Afrikaans!
Ek hoop ek onthou reg. Tydens die eerste ACT | UJ Arts & Culture Conference het Deon Opperman gesê sy toneelstukke is lig en vermaaklik, maar dra tog dieselfde ernstige/nodige “boodskap” oor as byvoorbeeld ’n swaar, dramatiese stuk. Die verskil is, hy verkoop kaartjies, waarteenoor die swaar stukke sukkel om voort te bestaan. Wat dink jy?
Of course, “messages” can be carried through comedy and tragedy. While I produce work that uses satire to make social commentary, my preference is for theatre that serves a cathartic role through confronting the things that cause us anxiety. This does not mean that theatre has to be boring; on the contrary, the challenge is to make it as engrossing, engaging and theatrically excellent as possible to stimulate people intellectually and to move people emotionally.
