On Sunday 29 June, the stately Nederburg Manor House in Paarl will come alive with the sounds of some of the most beautiful melodies ever written for voice and piano. Performed by leading South African soprano, Zanne Stapelberg, and pianist, Albie van Schalkwyk, the concert marks the launch of the annual Nederburg Concert Series.
The programme is a celebration of songs from around the world and will feature beautiful art songs, cabaret songs and charming settings of Afrikaans lyrics and poems. In the first half, songs by French composers, Francis Poulenc and Erik Satie, and American composers such as Leonard Bernstein and Samuel Barber can be heard. Familiar melodies by legendary composers of musical theatre, Cole Porter and George Gershwin, will round it off.
A tribute to the songs of versatile German composer, Kurt Weill, will set the tone for the second half with the remainder of the performance dedicated to Afrikaans songs. Melodies made famous by songstress Amanda Strydom, including the poignant, Ek loop die pad al lank, my lam, and Albie Louw’s ingenious settings of poems by quirky Afrikaans poet, Philip de Vos, will bring the concert to a close.
Tickets at R200 per person include Nederburg wines as well as a hearty finger supper after the performance. Bookings can be made by dialing 021 809 8412, during office hours, or sending an e-mail to concerts@distell.co.za.
