Wise man's song

I once spoke to a wise old man
when I had some questions of my own
I said, “Sir, I’m not askin’ for an answer
just tell me where to look, where to go”

For a moment
there was silence
His heart was burning through his eyes
and he said:

CHORUS:
Child, you gotta listen
‘cause the answer lies inside
Go into the wilderness
Where your heart will come alive

But I was always in a hurry
and the trees all looked the same
My mind was just too busy
to hear the melody as it came

Thirty years and not a sign
of the answers I did seek
An old man, I sat down at the stream
tired and knowing I had grown weak

The water came singing over the stones
as the wind spoke through the trees
For the first time in thirty years
I found the meaning of the wise man’s pleas

Once again
there was silence
his heart was burning through his eyes
and he said:

CHORUS

So I sat down on a fallen log
my feet dangling in the water
Slowly I realised where to look
as a twirling leaf tapped my shoulder

I heard the birds and the bees
the wind and the choir of the stream
I felt joy as I was listening
and my old heart began to sing

For a moment
there was silence
his heart was burning through his eyes
and he said:

CHORUS

All my life I was searching
never saw the answers so close by
Life was such a noisy rush
my ears followed the city’s lie

At last at peace, my heart alive
tears came to my eyes
When I needed to, I didn’t listen
it’s now to late, I realise

For a moment
there was silence
my heart burning through my eyes
and now I say:

Kids, you gotta listen
‘cause the answer lies inside
Go into the wilderness
Where your heart will come alive
