The Westhuizen duo, consisting of pianists Pierre and Sophié van der Westhuizen, will perform in the ZK Matthews Great Hall at Unisa on Sunday 22 September at 16:00.
The Westhuizen Duo has studied in Potchefstroom before continuing their studies in the US.
Currently they reside in the Cleveland area, where Pierre has recently been appointed as the Executive Director of the Cleveland International Piano Competition. Sophié has joined the faculty of Youngstown State University and also teaches piano at The Cleveland Music Settlement and Cuyahoga Community College.
They both previously served on the faculty of Heidelberg University as Assistant Professors of Piano and Co-coordinators of the Keyboard Division.
Pierre and Sophié enjoy teaching master classes wherever they perform and have served as guest artists at the Cleveland Institute of Music’s Summer Sonata Festival.
The duo’s latest CD release, on AMP Recordings, features the complete works for two pianos by Francis Poulenc.
First on their concert programme is a transcription by Siloti of the Andante from Bach’s Brandenburg no 2.
It is followed by the Gazebo Dances by John Corigliano, the Variations on a Theme of Haydn by Brahms, movements from the Petite Suite by Debussy and another set of variations, this time on a theme by Beethoven, as composed by Saint-Saens.
Tickets for the concert are sold only at the door at R90 for adults and R70 for students and seniors.
