New York based violinist Marc Uys and Romanian/South African pianist Laura Pauna will perform works for violin and piano on Sunday 2 September 2012 at 16:00 in the Enoch Sontonga Hall on the Unisa Sunnyside Campus.

Marc Uys who was born in Pietermaritzburg, holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Cape Town, with distinction.

Laura Pauna holds a post graduate performance diploma from the prestigious Hannover Music
Conservatoire in Germany, where she has been admitted into the famous “Concert Soloist

From 2002 until 2006 Marc lead the Sontonga Quartet in concerts around South Africa, Australia, France, the UK and the USA.

Marc plays a fine 18th century Italian instrument on generous loan from the Lindbergh Arts Foundation.

Laura has performed and received many piano duo prizes with South African pianist Cara Hesse. They have performed at such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, Salzburg Grosse Saal, Concertgebouw Amsterdam and the Jerusalem Theatre.

The duo won the First Prize in the Grieg Competition, "Prix de Oslo" (2007) and again in 2009, the Ibla Prand Prize (2006), the Valentino Bucchi Competition (Rome, 2006) and the Mozarteum Prize in 2007.

The programme for Sunday’s concert consists of the Sonata in G major, K301 by Mozart, Richard Strauss’ Sonata in E flat major, Romance by Amy Beach and Peter Klatzow from Cape Town’s Sonata for violin and piano.

It is interesting to know that Amy Beach (1867 – 1944) was the first successful American female composer of large-scale art music.

A child prodigy, she was able to sing forty tunes accurately by age one; by age two she could improvise a countermelody to any melody her mother sang, she taught herself to read at only four years old, and began composing simple waltzes at five years old .

Tickets for this event are sold only at the door at R85 for adults and R65 for students and pensioners.
