Tribute to legendary band: The Blue Notes

  • 0

The Blue Notes Tribute Orkestra, a seven piece band that was formed to commemorate the legendary 60’s group The Blue Notes, will perform on 25 July at 19:30 in the Z K Matthews Great Hall at Unisa in Pretoria.

The Blue Notes were a South African jazz sextet whose definitive line-up featured Chris McGregor on piano, Mongezi Feza on trumpet, Dudu Pukwana on alto saxophone, Nikele Moyake on tenor saxophone, Johnny Dyani on bass, and Louis Moholo on drums.

After moving away from their home country in 1964, they established themselves on the European jazz circuit, where they continued to play and record through the 1970s.

They are now considered one of the great free jazz bands of their era, whose music was given a unique flavour by their integration of African styles such as Kwela into the progressive jazz ideas of the time.

The Blue Notes Tribute Orkestra, led by Marcus Wyatt on trumpet, consists of pianist Andile Yenana, Siya Makuzeni  on voice and trombone, Mthunzi Mvubu on alto saxophone, Janus van der Merwe on tenor saxophone, Thembinkosi Mavimbela  on bass and Ayanda Sikade on drums.

Tickets are sold at the door for R95 (adults) and R75 (students and pensioners).
