The Tribeca Film Festival just launched an international film competition. One of the judges, Academy Award winner Geoffrey Fletcher, explains how filmmakers and budding filmmakers are given the chance to make their own short film by interpreting a script created by him. What is the Tribeca Film Festival?

What is the Tribeca Film Festival?

The Tribeca Film Festival is a film festival founded in 2002 by Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro and Craig Hatkoff in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the consequent loss of vitality in the TriBeCa neighbourhood in Lower Manhattan. The mission of the festival is "to enable the international film community and the general public to experience the power of film by redefining the film festival experience". The Tribeca Film Festival was founded to celebrate New York City as a major filmmaking centre and to contribute to the long-term recovery of lower Manhattan.

I believe there will soon be a local version - could you please tell us a bit about it?

We do not represent the Tribeca Film Festival, so I am unable to comment. However, here is a link concerning this.

What is the international film competition they've just launched?

With imagination at the heart of both Bombay Sapphire and filmmaking, this competition, titled The Bombay Sapphire Imagination Series, aims to celebrate endless creativity and the brand’s belief in the power of imagination.

We are offering filmmakers and budding filmmakers the chance to make their own short film by interpreting a script created by me. The five most imaginative film concepts will be chosen, made into 5-minute films and premiered at an international event.

From April 26 budding filmmakers can view the script at www.imaginationseries.com and can submit their interpretation of my script on the site from the May 8, 2012. Entries close August 1.

What are some of the prizes?

A global judging panel, including myself and other industry leaders put together by the Tribeca Film Festival, will select five winners from a shortlist of entries, who will then go on to produce and direct their own individual films to view at a star-studded international premiere early 2013.

Where can one read the competition rules and follow Tribeca on social networks?
