Tony Cox and Derek Gripper at Lucky Bean

Lucky Bean Restaurant presents consecutive Sunday nights of guitar genius
with Tony Cox on 27 January and Derek Gripper on 3 February.

Tony Cox is making a rare appearance in Johannesburg.
Blessed with a distinctive style and an enviable array of guitar skills,
this multiple award-winning guitarist is known in and out the country for
his six-string prowess.

Cox delivers up a mix of his laconic humour with a fair dose of
story-telling; taking any listener on an aural journey that is at once new,
jaw-dropping and simply unforgettable. Cox's shows often reduce his audience
to fits of laughter and then gasps of amazement at what comes out of his
guitar.

Do not pass up the opportunity of witnessing for yourself just why this
guitarist regularly moves local and foreign audiences from Italy to Canada,
from the USA to the UK - to jump to their feet shouting for more...

What the critics say: 'Cox baits the listener into rapturous moments of
sublime guitar playing' - Craig Feris, What's On Cape Town - 2012

'The strength and precision of what emerges from this man's Mervyn Davis
guitar is quite breathtaking' - Andrew Smith, The Press and Journal,
Scotland, Jan 2010

Derek Gripper live at Lucky Bean
Sunday 3 February at 7pm
(One lucky guest will win a CD hamper on the night)
We are absolutely thrilled to be featuring the sensational Derek Gripper
again. Last July he launched his CD "One Night On Earth" at Lucky Bean and
it was easily one of the most wonderful performances that we have ever
staged. From the moment Derek picked up his guitar to when he rose to take a
bow, there was a deep silence punctuated by explosive applause and gasps of
wonder.

Derek will be performing material from the internationally acclaimed CD "One
Night On Earth" as well as more Kora music that he has transcribed.

Solo Acoustic Guitarist, Composer, Arranger and Performer Derek Gripper

For over ten years guitarist Derek Gripper has produced a host of visionary
musical works by fusing Africa's disparate creative traditions with styles
throughout the world, creating a classical guitar music that is uniquely his
own.

His most recent work, "One Night On Earth", transcriptions and performances
of the Kora music of African musicians like Malian virtuosos Toumani
Diabate, Ballake Sissoko, and Ali Farka Toure, has created an entirely new
repertoire for the African Guitar, as well as creating the first ever
classical guitar repertoire from the rich and diverse West African musical
tradition.
