The wedding
Syrup-yellow light fading, west
Pastel-pink shell light fading, east
The marriage of dusk and day
Merging into a symmetrically dark night sky.
Carrot soup
Thursday evenings
Lettie chops carrots, onions, potatoes;
skins pile on the table
the kitchen steam-filled; uncommonly cosy
comfort from the icy hours
of Highveld hockey practice
balancing the bowl on sport-scuffed adolescent knees;
warm orange savoury balm,
watching soap operas;
on those nights
I am home-grown,
cared for, cured from cold
whispering, relentless hunger;
on those nights
nourished, full-bellied, healthy.
Waking
The dream lingers
Like Marmite on the palate
Sharp, stubborn, savoury
Slowly swallowed away.
