The Korngold Project: Part 1

  • 0

On the 26th of May TwoPianists Records is presenting the long awaited Korngold Project: Part 1. The featured artists are Daniel Rowland (violin – UK/Netherlands), Priya Mitchell (violin - UK), Julian Arp (cello – Germany) and Luis Magalhaes (piano – South Africa/Portugal). Once again music has proven to be the universal language, bringing together four artists from different parts of the world to be united by the synergetic power of music. This once-in-a-lifetime musical experience will take place on Sunday 26 May at 16h30 in the Endler Hall, Stellenbosch.

The ensemble will be playing two works by the Austrian composer, Eric Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957): Piano Trio Op.1, and Suite Op 23 for two violins, cello and piano left hand. As a child Korngold was deemed a prodigy, and started composing at the age of eight. During the years before World War Two, Korngold enjoyed great success in Vienna as a prolific composer of instrumental as well as operatic music. He also gained fame as the creator of the symphonic film score during Hollywood’s Golden Age. Towards the end of his life, his previously favorable status as classical music composer faded away as his former homeland rejected his musical genius. Despite the latter’s inability to recognize his talent, Korngold proved to be one of the finest composers of the 20th century leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of musical brilliance.

Richard Strauss is said to have heard the Piano Trio in D major, Op. 1 (1910), and remarked that it was an astonishingly assured composition "for one so young". Korngold’s then-emerging composition style was characterized by highly expressive musical language infused with modern harmonies.

After the performance of the Trio, the musical journey is set forth with another Korngold masterpiece, Suite Op 23. This piece is scored for two violins, cello and the unusual piano part for only left hand, and was commissioned by Paul Wittgenstein whom had lost his right arm in the war. Not only does this work display the pianist’s virtuosic capabilities, but it also employs a vast emotional palette that ranges from bitter disillusionment to a melodious sense of peace and fulfillment.
