Seen elsewhere: What highs have we not experienced in Afrikaans literature

It warms my heart to hear everybody saying what a triumph Breyten Breytenbach’s last work was after seeing Verwelkingslied at the Suidoosterfees. It’s like a batsman playing his last test and scoring a hundred in the second innings. Or a bowler ending with 10 wickets in his last game. It very rarely happens. Such fairytales are only reserved for those who will live in our memories till dementia or death have their way with us. And it is fitting that such an ending is bestowed upon one of the greatest Afrikaans poets of all time, a man whose powers never dimmed.

And tomorrow, I just know that Antjie Krog is going to roll back the years with her new book Binnerym van bloed. It's a good year to be an admirer of Afrikaans literature.

The critics of the language can say what they want, but what highs have we not experienced in Afrikaans literature over such a short period.
