Rory and I were very privileged to attend the 6th Etienne van Heerden Veldsoirée in iNxuba/Cradock this past weekend. Road-tripping with Peter Vale, our roommate in the gorgeous “Millar’s” Tuishuis, made it all the better.
My man’s talk on the “Paradox of the biographer” was excellent and so very well received (despite his anxiety about presenting to a group of such esteemed writers and academics). Well done, Rory Riordan!
The discussions, reviews, talks, debates, the music (oh wow! the music!), the new friends, the reconnecting with old friends, the wonderful Karoo and my favourite accommodation in all the world, made this a perfect and inspiring weekend. I’ve come away with much to read, much to listen to and so much to consider about the impact of writers, reviewers, books, poetry, archives, historians, journalists, “smaakmakers” (NOT Aromat🙃), readers, academia, performers and musicians.
We are so blessed to live in a country with minds like the ones encountered here.
