Seen elsewhere: The aeroplane analogy

Seen on a prayer group on WhatsApp:

My Dearest Family and Friends

I know that we all have the urge to protect ourselves and our families at this time, and quite rightly so.

I call it the “aeroplane analogy”, where we are told to make sure we are safe before we try to help others.

And now that we have done that, let us take an honest, objective look at what is at play here.

  1. There is hopelessness among LOTS of people in our country – there are many people who feel that they have NOTHING to lose. Yes, the lawlessness and disrespect for others' property cannot be condoned, but just stay with me.
  2. Looting is not new to us. And sadly, looting has taken place on such high levels in SA – think VBS Bank, state capture, etc, etc.
  3. As children of God, we cannot turn a blind eye to the reality of the situation – it's like when you have borer in your house, you can continue to just sweep up the borer droppings, or you can treat the problem and try to get rid of the borer.

At this point in SA, we are just sweeping up borer droppings:

  • Sending the army and bringing police officers back from leave to bolster the amount of support...
  • President meeting twice a day with his advisors....

Those things may make us FEEL good or a bit safer, but that's like thinking there's nothing underneath the tip of the iceberg. 🤦🏻‍♀️\

The stark inequality, the high levels of unemployment and the saddening poverty, while no fault of ours, is NOT going to miraculously disappear with the increased police or army presence or with daily meetings of the president and his men.

So, that's where we need to focus.

Let’s pray:

Lord our God,
It pains us to see what is happening around our beloved country.
Father, you have created us and it is your will for us to have life and have it in abundance.
As our country grieves and groans today, we seek your supernatural intervention. Bring healing, restoration, new life.
Comfort the hearts of those who have lost loved ones.
God of the impossible, do what only you can do.
We bind all feelings of helplessness and hopelessness and we loose hope and potential over our beautiful land.
We speak peace and health over our people and we come against any fear and doubt in Jesus' name.
We pray for the leaders in our land. Remove the spirit of complacency and eloquent speech and replace it with a spirit of urgency and action and above all, true and genuine commitment to change.
Give us love and a true sense of Ubuntu.
God, bless our beautiful land and all its people.
We make these requests, not because we are worthy, but because you say that whatever we ask in your name, you will grant it.
In the name of Jesus,
Amen

Thank you for praying with me. Let’s continue to look outward and always remember those less fortunate than us.

Lots of love
Joey Usher ♥️♥️
