When and how was the SA Cocktail Festival started?

Right from the start in 2016, launching SA Cocktail Week was highly ambitious. What we proposed was an event that had never existed in South Africa before, to be run by two ladies with no previous history or involvement in the industry. This didn’t deter us one bit. South Africa has a long track record of producing world-class bartenders, and is home to some premium cocktail bars and spirit brands.

What we aimed to do, was create a platform that would boast both the community and the everyday consumer, and from all perspectives SA Cocktail Week 2016/2017 was a huge success.

What can attendees expect from the festival?

A signature event is dedicated to crafted cocktails and the very best of South Africa’s bar scene, featuring bar-hopping tours, masterclasses, fun entertainment and live performances, with headline acts such as Yanga Sobetu, Jarrad Ricketts, Strange Love and more.

This year’s theme is “The grand street party with a hint of colour”. What inspired this theme?

A party ain’t a party without a feel and look to it. The core concept of the entire event is to be dressed in all white with a touch of the colour of our Rainbow Nation. The colour white is symbolic of peace, whimsicality, purity as well as unity, especially if everyone makes the effort and sticks to the dress code. The inspiration was that we wanted to do it a bit differently this year, hence the “street festival”, the fun, the free, tantalising cocktails, the food and the great company.

SA Cocktail Festival offers the attendees masterclasses. What masterclasses are available?

We are stepping up the educational element of drinking cocktails by creating masterclasses by some of Cape Town’s finest bartenders, mixologists and brands, all in one space together. At the masterclasses, which cater for around 15 to 20 attendees per session, the bartenders will present the recipes and stories behind their signature cocktails and share a theme that is close to their heart. They will also demonstrate two signature drinks and field questions from the attendees.

What is the most popular cocktail/drink for 2020? Why?

I have heard that the Clifton Sunset is a pretty and nice cocktail to try.

Gin seems to be experiencing a revival. Why do you think that is?

People are more focused on the flavour, ingredients and exclusive tastes these days, rather than the old, bland G&T. Spicing and colouring the classic drink to showcase the variety of gin and possible pairings is now the trend.
