Literary Legacies: Celebrating the Enduring Power of Literature

The Centre for Creative Arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) is presenting the Time of the Writer festival from 14 to 21 March. A noteworthy focus will be on literary legacies, inviting festival attendees to engage in profound reflections on the significance of literary legacies in our ever-evolving world.

The Time of the Writer festival aspires to foster a dialogue that not only celebrates the rich heritage of literary contributions but also sparks discussions on how contemporary writers are shaping and contributing to the ongoing narrative of literature. As we navigate this dynamic intersection of tradition and innovation, the festival promises to be a space for intellectual exchange, reflection, and the revival of a profound appreciation for the enduring power of literary legacies in our ever-evolving world.

“In the midst of a rapidly evolving literary landscape, the festival seeks to prompt a thoughtful examination of the enduring impact and influence that writers leave behind. Participants will be encouraged to navigate the challenges posed by the digital age, where the sheer volume of new literary works poses both opportunities and challenges for the preservation and recognition of literary heritage”, says Ismail Mahomed, Director of the Centre.”

Literary Legacies and Legends: Reflections on Can Temba, Bessie Head, and Sol Plaatje

Esteemed authors Siphiwo MahalaBarbara Boswell, and Sabata Mpho Mokae will reflect on the enduring impact of Can Themba, Bessie Head, and Sol Plaatje, respectively. Moderated by Sandile Mamela, this session promises a rich discussion uncovering the intricate connections between the works of these legends and their lasting impact on South Africa’s literary history and cultural heritage.

Intellectual Giants of the Eastern Cape: Forged Legacies

The festival’s exploration of literary legacies continues with the screening of the documentary Intellectual Giants of the Eastern Cape is set to be presented. This documentary pays homage to the remarkable intellectual heritage that unfolded in the 19th and early 20th centuries, as countless black South Africans pursued education through Eastern Cape mission schools. It sheds light on the emergence of several generations of Eastern Cape intellectuals, a legacy carved by visionaries like Tiyo Soga, SEK Mqhayi, Phyllis Ntantala, and JT Jabavu. These “giants” not only embraced education but also, crucially, challenged colonial thought. They bravely forged their own intellectual paths, developing ideas that transcended the imposed frameworks of the time.

Join the festival for the screening, where the narrative unfolds through the lives and ideas of these extraordinary individuals. Following the film, the audience can engage in a thought-provoking Q&A session with Sanele KaNtshingana and Hleze Kunju and is invited to dive into the complexities of intellectual resistance, cultural identity preservation, and the lasting impact these Eastern Cape intellectuals had on shaping both their era but the ongoing narrative of South African intellectual heritage.

Booking She Comes: A Literary Odyssey

The festival will also present a screening of Booking She Come, a documentary produced by Sizakele Mdi that chronicles the inspiring journey of Charmaine Monareng Mrwebi. A devoted lover of books and a passionate poet, Charmaine transformed her love for literature into a lifelong artistic mission. The film follows her dedication to educating her community about the power of reading and preserving their language, drawing upon Africa’s rich storytelling traditions.

After the screening,  a discussion led by Nolovuyo Mjoli delves deeper into the layers of Charmaine’s literary legacy and the significance of documenting one’s creative contributions.

“As we open Alliance Française and our digital space to writers, thinkers, and literature enthusiasts, we extend a warm welcome to all who will join us in commemorating the rich heritage of literary contributions that have shaped our cultural landscape. Together, to celebrate the power of narratives and the enduring legacies left by those who have paved the way for generations to come”, says Tsosheletso Chidi, Resident Curator Intern at the Centre for Creative Arts.
