The Publishers’ Association of South Africa (PASA) Literacy Committee is urging all media platforms to celebrate the joy of reading during National Book Week, taking place from 5–11 September 2025. This pivotal week also incorporates International Literacy Day on 8 September.
In an increasingly digital world, the simple, tactile experience of reading and sharing a book remains a powerful tool for personal development, entertainment and connection. Reading for pleasure is a cornerstone of lifelong learning and a key to unlocking a child’s potential. It builds empathy, allows for exploration of different worlds, cultures, and people and offers escapism and imagination. Publishers, booksellers, NGOs, librarians, authors and illustrators across the literary landscape will be working with schools, communities, and libraries to help build a love of reading and books.
Please join us in this celebration by:
- Featuring interviews with South African authors, illustrators, and publishers.
- Spotlighting the crucial work being done by literacy organisations and reading campaigns such as Nal'ibali.
- Sharing reading lists, books that changed your life, your favourite books to read to and with children, and what’s on the TBR pile
- Discussing the challenges and triumphs of building a reading nation with educators, librarians, and community leaders.
PASA’s goal is not to reinvent the many wonderful campaigns, but to enhance and build on them. With a collective energy and effort, we aim to celebrate books, authors, readers and the power of books.
