The 14th Unisa International Piano competition will commence on 20 January 2020 with an opening ceremony and concert. At the opening ceremony, all candidates and jury members will be introduced the public. This will be followed by a performance of the Unisa Big Band directed by Karendra Devroop.
Unisa will present the 32 international candidates many of whom have already won major international piano competitions and are currently studying at some of the most prestigious institutions in the world.
This includes 18 world class classical candidates and 14 of the most respected international jazz pianists. The candidate list will include the South African candidates who successfully qualified to enter the competition. The jury for the competition which includes 10 of the world’s most prolific classical and jazz pianists will also be presented.
The evening will conclude with a performance by the Unisa Big Band which is one of South Africa’s leading jazz ensembles comprised of 17 of our country’s most recognized jazz artists. The Unisa Big Band will premier 4 South African jazz works that have been arranged specifically for the concert.
The concert will also feature jazz vocalists Tshepo Tshabalala and Daniella Hart who are first and second place winners of Unisa’s recent national voice competition.
The opening ceremony and concert are free and open to the public but attendees are requested to arrive early as space is limited.
