Once upon an Island: Write & illustrate your own children’s book in a medieval Greek village with master illustrator Piet Grobler
Write and illustrate a picture book, guided by award-winning South African illustrator Piet Grobler. Be inspired by the setting and the inhabitants of the lovely Greek island of Lesbos (in the most picturesque port village) to create that story that you have been hoping to tell for a long time!
Day 1: Chance
Morning: Happy accidents, experimental image making, collecting stuff and idea generation in the streets of Lesbos
Afternoon: Individual sessions and free time
Day 2: A sense of place and finding characters looking for stories
Morning: Observation-drawing in the outdoors. Interpreting our environment and looking at potential settings for your story as well as drawing people and animals from observation in town or in the countryside. Identifying possible characters or character ideas for your own story
Afternoon: Individual sessions and free time
Day 3: Plot it:
Morning: Conceptualising your story with the information you have gathered and creating a story board. Thinking on paper. Sketchbook, dummies
Afternoon: Individual sessions and free time
Day 4: Illustrate it!:
Morning: Show-and-tell about your progress, feedback and practical illustration by using analogue (non-digital or traditional) hand- techniques and mediums
Afternoon: Individual feedback and free time
Day 5: More illustration:
Morning: Show-and-tell about your progress, feedback and practical work. Further developing of your story and working on your picture book
Afternoon: Individual feedback and free time
Day 6: Show and tell: Exhibition and story-telling of the week's work
Workshop presenter
South-African illustrator, Piet Grobler, has illustrated 90 books of which many have been awarded internationally – amongst others, A Golden Apple at the Biennale for Illustration in Bratislava and the French Octogône de Chéne. His books have been translated into 16 languages. Piet has served on several international juries for picture book illustration competitions, such as the BIB (Bratislava) and the NAMI Concours (Korea). He is a freelance illustrator and author, co-founder of the International Centre for the Picture Book in Society and Visiting Professor at the University of Worcester, UK, where he taught for eight years.
Price
- €1 400 p/p
- Tariffs include two meals per day, course fee and art supplies, transfers from and to the airport.
- Travel and accommodation excluded.
- 50% deposit secures your place. The balance is payable 30 days before the event. Full amount if booked in less than 30 days prior.
- You pay your for your own accommodation. We have options for all budgets in beautiful village house around The Talking Table venue.
- We will guide you to accommodation in the village, from the more affordable to the more luxurious. The choice is yours. Prices will be in the range from around 40 to 100 euro per night
