Eastern Cape vocal ensemble Amanene The Gents is set to present its first independent theatrical production Isiqalo: The beginning – “Hamba Nam Ndipheleke” at the Guild Theatre in East London on 17 July, celebrating five years of a significant milestone in the group’s artistic journey.
More than just a concert, Isiqalo is a powerful fusion of a cappella music, storytelling, movement, African tradition, and contemporary theatre. The production explores themes of identity, resilience, hope, heritage and the courage to embrace new beginnings.
Founded in 2022, Amanene The Gents has steadily built a reputation for captivating audiences with rich vocal harmonies inspired by Afro Soul, Afro Jazz and African choral traditions. This production represents the group’s most ambitious project to date, showcasing not only their musical talent but also their vision to create meaningful theatrical experiences rooted in African storytelling.
The title, Isiqalo, meaning the beginning, symbolises a new chapter for both the group and the communities they hope to inspire. The subtitle, Hamba nam ndipheleke, means walk with me and accompany me. It invites audiences to join an emotional journey of growth, healing, and self-discovery.
This production is a celebration of where we come from, the struggles that shape us, and the dreams that carry us forward. We want every person who walks into the theatre to leave feeling inspired and reminded that every ending can become a beautiful beginning.
The performance will also celebrate the richness of African culture through traditional attire, choreography, and authentic musical expression, creating an immersive experience for audiences of all ages.
The production is directed and performed by Amanene The Gents, with choreography by Samkelo Sintwa.
