“In celebration of the Women’s Day long weekend in August, classical music enthusiasts can look forward to enjoying music by exceptional women at the 11th Klein Karoo Klassique.”

This according to Hugo Theart, artistic director of this winter festival of music, art, food and wine, presented in Oudtshoorn from Thursday, 8 to Sunday, 11 August.

Theart adds that, for the first time since 2015, Klein Karoo Klassique will be presenting a Gala Concert. “We are proud to host this special Gala Concert to celebrate Women’s Day with duos and trios from operettas, musicals and opera, performed by renowned Cape Town soprano Minette du Toit-Pearce, TV personality and Kunste Onbeperk Young Voice award recipient, Lynelle Kenned and Janel Speelman, who until recently lived and performed in the USA, with piano accompaniment by Philippus Hugo.” The audience can expect an unforgettable gathering of voices with the interpretation of Barcarolle from The Tales of Hoffmann, The Flower Duet from Lakmé, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Pie Jesu, and the humorous Cats’ Duet by Rossini amongst others. The young pianist Qden Blauw will open this programme on Saturday, 10 August at 19:00.

Klassique begins on Thursday, 8 August at 18:30 when two women join forces in La Femme! – A Celebration of Music and Dance. Tanya Diamond (dance & choreography) and Nina Fourie-Gouws (guitar) combine the passion, fire and intensity of authentic contemporary Flamenco dance with the rich, complex and sensuous sounds of classical guitar. Diamond is an internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer, and Gouws a concert guitarist and lecturer at the Stellenbosch Conservatorium. This performance will include works by Albéniz, Brouwer, Barrios, Domeniconi, Ibert, Tárrega and Vivaldi, with traditional Spanish accompaniment by members of the SoloFLAMENCO dance studio.

In Trio du Cap Classique (Friday, 9 August at 10:30) the internationally acclaimed Liesl Stoltz combines works for flute, cello and piano, including Felix Mendelssohn’s Trio in D minor, possibly his most well-known chamber composition, as well as a beautiful arrangement of Arnold Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night). The programme concludes with Autumn by Argentine tango composer, Astor Piazzolla. This movement forms part of his Four Seasons. Well-known South African pianist, François du Toit and French cellist, David Pinoit, join her in this recital.

Zanta Hofmeyr (violin) and Olive Sandilands (piano) collaborate with Miro Chakaryan (violin) in Violin Dialogue, a recital crowned with the Fiësta prize for best achievement in classical music and best classical music production at Aardklop in 2018. It is an exciting programme of virtuoso violin duos, marked by fireworks, intensity and unbridled passion. Expect works by Wieniawski, Sarasate, Leclair, Shostakovich and Moszkowski in this performance on Saturday, 10 August at 10:30.

In Sublime String Quartets from Bohemia (Sunday, 11 August at 11:00) the Amici String Quartet from Cape Town, widely regarded as one of the country’s finest chamber music ensembles, takes the audience on a journey through works from some of the finest string quartet composers in history. Suzanne Martens (first violin), and Karin Gaertner (viola) share the stage with David Bester (second violin), and Peter Martens (cello). Works by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven and Schubert are represented through the first movement of the Rosamunde Quartet by Schubert, and the American Quartet by the prolific quartet composer from the Czech Republic, Dvořák, combines elements of folk music from his native Bohemia with those of his new world, the United States of America.

“Thanks to the support of the Rupert Music Foundation, festivalgoers have the opportunity to see all of the recitals at this year’s Klein Karoo Klassique for only R950, a saving of R240, with the Klassique Package,” Theart concludes.
