Gavin Minter returns to his paradise with new album

Gavin Minter

You recently had a double album launch along with Natasha Meister– why the decision to do that?

I recently met Natasha Meister on a gig and immediately recognised her talent. We were both about to launch new albums and I thought it was a great opportunity to do it together.

What is it about your and Natasha's music that the one complements the other?

We both love folk/rock. Natasha has a more blues influence and I come from a jazz background – so as far as roots are concerned the music and its audiences would certainly complement each other.

Tell us about your new album – what is it called and what was the concept behind it?

It is called My Return to Paradise. It is a personal document of my life, and I went back to the music I grew up with.

What do you think it is about folk and acoustic rock that makes it so timeless?

With any genre of music that has a strong history and grounding in the psyche of music lovers, any time you tap into that music again you continue with a tradition that is timeless.

Take us through the process of creating an album – how do you do that?

I write the tunes – this can happen over a few years. I then play the tunes live with my band. Then, when I have decided that it feels right we go into the studio – track the music mix and release.

Will you be touring with My Return to Paradise?

I will certainly tour the album later this year. I will also be touring Sweden later on in the year.

Where can we see you next on stage?

This Friday and Saturday at the Mahogany Room I will be playing with my sextet (three horns plus piano, double bass and drums – but it will be jazz!).
