The federal government will seek parliamentary approval to increase its debt limit to $500 billion, Treasurer Joe Hockey has announced.
Otherwise, the current $300 billion limit will be hit by December 12, Mr Hockey said.
Debt was expected to peak at $370 billion in the pre-election fiscal outlook, but the government has been advised it will exceed $400 billion, he said.
Mr Hockey said the debt was not set to increase to $500 billion, but it was important for the government to allow for a buffer of $40 billion to $60 billion.
Mr Hockey said there needed to be stability and certainty for the financial markets about the government's capacity to finance its operations for the foreseeable future.
"We need not look any further than the recent events in the United States to realise how imperative for stability and certainty is for confidence," he said.
The Treasurer also announced a wide-ranging commission of audit.

Ons gradering op die oomblik is DDD so ons sal nooit soveel skuld kan maak nie en om hierdie rede sal ons ook nie kreperende lande kan help soos Australië en die VSA hulle help nie. Jy moet maar hoop die Weste word nooit so bankrot soos jy hulle uitmaak om te wees nie want dan gaan die hele derde wêreld moer toe wees.
