Charl du Plessis Trio

The Unisa Music Foundation lunch hour concert series continues this month with a concert by the Charl du Plessis Trio on Friday 17 May at 13:00 in the Miriam Makeba Concert Hall. The Charl du Plessis Trio is one of the leading cross-over jazz ensembles in SA specializing in mixing classical music with jazz. On 17 May this outfit will perform music by Baroque composers Bach, Handel and Vivaldi in a jazz style arranged by Du Plessis.  This performance will precede their tour of Switzerland in July.

Charl du Plessis is the youngest person on the African continent to be named a Steinway Artist. His performance on Friday will include bassist Werner Spies and drummer Hugo Radyn.

Entry is free, but audience members are advised to come early.

Guitar duo from Uruguy performs at UNISA

The Umbral duo, consisting of Ignacio Correa and Sebastián Segarra will give a duo recital in the Miriam Makeba Hall at Unisa on Sunday 19 May at 16:00.  The guitar duo from Uruguay was formed in 2006 when together with Sergio Fernández Cabrera they worked on a few performances of chamber music. They aim to promote Latin American music internationally. Their niche repertoire requires both academic discipline and a serious approach to the style of folk art.

The versatile duo manages different musical aesthetics. They have performed at jazz festivals as well as chamber music venues in many different countries including Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, Czech Republic, Egypt, China and Japan.

In 2008 they received the Concours Funds Prize awarded by the Uruguay Ministry of Education and Culture, which afforded them the opportunity to perform concerts throughout Uruguay.

Tickets for the concert are sold at the door for R90 (adults) and R70 (students and pensioners).
