This mentor feedback is part of the LitNet | STAND theatre review workshop. The ten participants each submit a review to the workshop mentors for feedback. The participants will then be able to edit their submissions, receive additional feedback from the mentors and finalise their reviews.
This is the final feedback on version 2 of Ignus Rademeyer’s review.
Feedback from Tracy Saunders
The edit of this review has resulted in a piece of writing which is both insightful and enjoyable to read. The added contextualising of a UK-based story of violent crime in the South African environment adds valuable commentary. Additional information about Tinarie’s career trajectory highlights her contribution to theatre and provides information which may not be known to readers. The timing of a production or a review to coincide with current affairs is sometimes deliberate. In this instance, the accidental coincidence of the review being published relatively close to Jon Venables’s parole hearing would have been worth noting and would have highlighted the continued relevance of the story. Ignus has written a review which would be of interest even to those not watching or attending the production.
Feedback from Nkgopoleng Moloi
This is an accomplished review. Rademeyer used the reviewers’ suggestions from the last iteration to build on an interesting text. The text is tighter and more compelling to read. The untangling of compound sentences as well as the addition of key background information was very effective.
What can take a review from technically strong to brilliant is a clear sense of style / writer’s sensibility. As the author rereads and rethinks their review, they will be able to make small adjustments in tone and word choice that will give it a distinct voice. This can only be achieved over time.
Overall, the work is well executed and impressive. I look forward to following Rademeyer’s writing journey.
