I remember my principals as being, firstly, male and in a position of authority. I remember them as being almost feared by many learners, but highly respected and admired by many teachers and parents. I did not see them as teachers, but more as “CEOs” of the organisation (school).
I think it is important for a school’s leadership (principals) to embody these principles, so as to cultivate and lead a school culture that recognises and values its diversity, among both staff and learners.
I am of the opinion that your more “traditional” schools tend to have a strong school culture, which is most likely to be better instilled in those learners who make up the majority of the school demographic. This is often because the staff composition of the school is also aligned with that demographic, making it easier for them to instil the common culture or attitudes. What is most concerning for me are the learners who make up the minority demographic of the school, and how they are often forced to assimilate into such a culture or set of attitudes, as a means of survival in the school context.
I am of the opinion that the school’s leadership structure plays a vital and strategic role with regard to planning for, as well as ensuring, optimal school functionality. The school’s vision, mission and values, which guide the decisions and actions of the leadership structure, are what I think ensures the success of the school.
Amid teachers’ widespread perceptions of leadership in schools being the sole responsibility of principals, I think it is important for principals to value distributive leadership and facilitate an enabling environment for teachers to lead in schools. I am of the opinion that when one is a part of an organisation, it is one’s experiences in decision-making that engender a sense of belonging and purpose. If teachers feel they are in an environment that allows them to lead from below and to contribute in decision-making processes, they can have a sense of ownership of whatever decision has been taken – ensuring their active participation in achieving the set goal(s).
