Joburg Film Festival film review: Amazing grace – a concert

  • 0

This film will be screened at the third Joburg Film Festival, 19–24 November.

“Concert footage from 1972 of Aretha Franklin performing songs from the best-selling gospel album at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles.”

Your enjoyment of this film hinges on whether you are an Aretha Franklin fan or not.

If you’re not a Franklin fan, avoid the film, because you’ll chew your arm off. It is what the description above declares it to be – concert footage from 1972. In other words, a straightforward documentation of Aretha performing for two nights. There are no interviews, biographical revelations or even information provided.

If you are indeed a fan, do not miss out on this opportunity at the Joburg Film Festival. It is rare footage of this incredible icon performing gospel music at a community church, backed by an incredible choir. It was filmed by Sydney Pollack over two exhausting days, and MC’d by the inimitable Reverend James Cleveland. The record was the best-selling gospel record of all time, but the film was not released due to technical difficulties. Until now.
