Unisa’s Department of Afrikaans and Theory of Literature is hosting a seminar to celebrate the publication of the book Soweto Theatre of Resistance 1984-1994, by Andile Xaba. The seminar will feature a panel discussion as well as a Q&A session with the author.

  • Where: Dr Miriam Makeba Concert Hall, Unisa Main Campus, Muckleneuk, Pretoria.
  • Time: 11:00
  • Date: 31 October 2026

The volume chronicles the theatre tradition of Soweto theatre between 1984 and 1994. It also celebrates key figures Gibson Kente, Matsemela Manaka and Maishe Maponya, who were pioneers that shaped a distinctly South African tradition of Theatre. The book also offers social analysis of Soweto itself, revealing how the township’s struggles gave rise to a unique theatrical voice. The volume is essential reading for scholars, students and anyone interested in the intersections of art, resistance and social change.

Adding to the celebrations are performances by the Voices of Sangoma choir and the poet Busisiwe Mahlangu.

Xaba is a senior lecturer specialising in theatre studies. He grew up in Soweto where he attended theatrical performances and he continues to explore developments in arts, culture and society.
