Dear Colleagues
Amazwi is pleased to share the news that the 2026 Amazwi Literature Heritage Ecology Conference will take place on 25 and 26 March 2026, at Amazwi's headquarters in Makhanda.
The conference theme is “People and other animals”. This theme invokes ecocritical approaches to animal studies. The ways in which animals are represented in literature, and indeed across the arts and sciences, shape and are shaped by human understanding of the natural world and our place in it. The ecocritical approach to the understanding of animals turns a critical gaze on anthropocentric perspectives on non-human animals and explores the complex interactions between “us” and “them”. In doing so it questions the boundaries we have created between ourselves and other animals and ponders how these boundaries may be disrupted and reimagined for the mutual benefit of all the living things concerned. Presentations are invited that explore the theme of “People and other animals” and all related matters.
