Hoverfly

Apparently in DRC they say:
when people clap for you,
take flight –
for you are a fly;
claps can end your life.

I can’t relate to the saying;
as I grew up, flies piled up
in our backyard fly trap.
Their black bulk
just turned noses up
and got glared at,
but they were never worth a clap.

I’ll wait – perhaps
I need a few slaps on the back
before I can understand.

    Keep writing Jemima Meyer. Your voice is one filled with prophetic vision, and relevance. Definitely one to watch. Is there a manuscript in the works by any chance? Praise be to Afrika, praise be to Steve Bantu Biko's Azania, and the beautiful, elegant presence in your writing. Don't stop writing about what matters to you, your burdens, and your cares.

  • Thank you, Abigail. I'm touched by your "slap on the back" 😉

    For now I'm just trying to write as much as possible. Hopefully later I'll publish a debut, but I don't want to be rash with it.

    Jemima it is so lovely of you to have written back to me. What are you reading now, what is your main source of inspiration? I love communicating with (Do you see yourself as a millennial, emerging poet? That thought just came to me now in mid-write.) younger poets and writers. Thank you once again for your kind words. I hope to hear from you again soon. Have a 😍 day further.

  • I remember enjoying "Die Groot Verseboek" as well as a few other anthologies in recent years, but nowadays I only read my Dietetics textbooks. Recently I did, however, read some poems by WB. Yeats. I started with Rilke's "Letters to a Young Poet" (which is totally my type of book), but haven't finished it (yet?). Because of my many other hobbies and interests I don't really prioritise reading at the moment. And you? Any must-reads?
    My inspiration comes mainly from reflecting on my daily experiences and encounters. If I could, I'd muse for months on end. What would you say inspires you?
    Haha, I guess I do identify as a millennial because I'm quite comfortable with technology; had Information Technology as an extra subject in school.
