The Oranjezicht Higgovale Neighbourhood Watch (OH Watch) will present a fun-filled family day of entertainment and activities for the community in celebration of Heritage Day on Tuesday 24 September 2013 from 10h00 to 16h00.
Families are invited to enjoy historical walking tours, an open-air food and flower market, a top-class live jazz and Balkan music performance, and tuck into an array of delicious food in the picturesque surrounds of the historic Homestead Park and Oranjezicht City Farm, in Upper Orange Street, Oranjezicht (opposite Carluccis). This is an ideal opportunity for people to bond with their neighbours, while celebrating the rich heritage of the area. Activities begin at 10:00 and the day’s events include a performance by the Andrew Ford Jazz Quartet and the Kolo Novo Balkan Band, Farm Yard Petting Animals for the young ones, a collaborative drumming experience for the little ones, a reptile demonstration, a magic show, face painting and more ending at 16:00 with historical walking tours of sites of interest in Oranjezicht and tours of the Field of Springs.
Part of the team of OH Watch who are succeeding to create ‘good neighbourliness’ among people living in the OH Watch area, is erstwhile Head of Cape Town Tourism, and Higgovale resident Sheryl Ozinsky, who is also current Chairperson of the Neighbourhood Watch and is also spearheading the Oranjezicht City Farm. ‘It’s no secret that more affluent suburbs are required to become further involved in managing their own affairs, such as community safety, cleansing, road maintenance etc. The whole idea behind the Heritage Day celebration is to use our public spaces for the benefit of the entire community, which in turn, keeps them cleaner and safer. The message we’d like to spread is that this is our area, our heritage, and our shared responsibility. We’d love everyone to become involved in some small way – and this special day presents an opportunity to find ways of doing this, while enjoying some ‘time out’ with newfound friends and neighbours.’ OH Watch has installed License Plate Recognition cameras in the residential areas of the City Bowl, for which they have raised a substantial amount of money.
One of the highlights of the day will be an opportunity to tour the Oranjezicht City Farm (www.ozcf.co.za). Entrance to the Park for the day is R15 for adults and free for children under 16. Food and refreshments will be on sale. For more information on the Oranjezicht Higgovale Neighbourhood Watch, visit www.ohwatch.co.za.
