Pankaj Mishra, is ’n skrywer wat ek al ’n ruk dophou en tot die slotsom gekom het is, is uitstekend in die kommentaar wat hy lewer en betroubaar in sy oordeel. Soos afgelei kan word is hy een van Salman Rushdie’s se Midnight Children en van die kolonies.
Soms kom ’n opstel jou rigting wat ’n perfekte opsomming is van wat jy jouself sou wou formuleer indien die woorde geredelik tot jou beskikking was. Pankaj Mishra se onlangse opstel was so ’n opstel.
Die geleentheid vir die opstel was sy bespreking van Niall Ferguson se Civilisation: The West and the Rest.
Pankaj Mishra open sy opstel met die volgende salvo:
Civilisation’s going to pieces, Tom Buchanan, the Yale-educated millionaire, abruptly informs Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby. I’ve gotten to be a terrible pessimist about things. Have you read The Rise of the Colored Empires by this man Goddard? … The idea is if we don’t look out the white race will be – will be utterly submerged.’ Buchanan carries on: ‘This fellow has worked out the whole thing. It’s up to us, who are the dominant race, to watch out or these other races will have control of things.’ ‘We’ve got to beat them down, and we’ve produced all the things that go to make civilisation – oh, science and art, and all that. Do you see?’
Die argumente is wel bekend en vind gereeld uitdrukking hier en het dalk nog steeds traksie in die samelewing en is werd om ondersoek te word om dit te bepaal.
Mishra bevestig dat die fiktiewe Goddard gebaseer is op Theodore Lothrop Stoddard en die se boek getiteld, The Rising Tide of Color against White World Supremacy wat in teenstelling met van die argumente van die tyd, in sy boek dit gewoon opdeel as ’n konflik tussen wit en swart, net soos Stoddard volgens Mishra, Stoddard, “also invested early in Islamophobia, arguing in The New World of Islam (1921) that Muslims posed a sinister threat to a hopelessly fractious and confused West”.
Die argumente is dus, tot ’n letter soos dit vandag nog woed, selfs op hierdie forum, alreeds vasgevang in die tyd van Stoddard en briljant opgesom deur Mishra in die eerste twee paragrawe van sy opstel.

Ferguson voer aan:
Without the spread of British rule around the world colonised peoples, such as Indians, would not have what are now their most valuable ideas and institutions – parliamentary democracy, individual freedom and the English language.
Hierdie word deur Mishra aan die hand van ’n Sjinese denker, Tang Tiaoding, beskryf as“white people’s histories”en dit is waarteen gewaak moet word, wanneer die geskiedenis beskryf word, hetsy hier ter plaatse of die konteks van ander lande en die weste in die algemeen.
Mishra bied dan die volgende korrektief aan:
In 1877, decades before anti-colonial leaders and intellectuals across Asia and Africa developed a systematic political critique of colonialism, the itinerant Muslim activist Jamal al-Din al-Afghani was attacking ‘the trap of duplicity’ in British accounts of India. The British had invested immense sums in developing a global network of modern communications simply in order, al-Afghani wrote, ‘to drain the substance of our wealth and facilitate the means of trade for the inhabitants of the British Isles and extend their sphere of riches’.
In die lig van die aanhalings en verwysings aangebied in hierdie brief, kan ek jou verseker dat ek myself nie as ’n “intellektuele leuenaar par excellence” beskou nie en is intens bewus van die gevaar van die sogenaamde “white people’s histories”.
