Fugard Theatre gets 15 Fleur du Cap nominations

The Fugard Theatre in District Six, Cape Town has received 15 prestigious Fleur du Cap Theatre Award nominations for several productions presented by, or hosted at, the Fugard Theatre in 2013.

Blood Brothers, currently running at the Fugard Theatre, has received two nominations; for Bianca Le Grange as Best Lead Actress in a Musical, and for Andrea Frankson as Best Supporting Actress in a Musical. Blood Brothers is adapted and directed by David Kramer and is currently booking until the end of March 2014.

Vigil picked up two nominations - for Graham Hopkins as Best Lead Actor in a Play and for Vanessa Cooke as Best Supporting Actress in a Play. Vigil was produced by Susan Danford, Stephen Jennings and Graham Hopkins in association with the National Arts Festival and directed by Christopher Weare.

The Rocky Horror Show, directed by Matthew Wild, has received nine nominations across six categories: for Brendan van Rhyn and Paul du Toit in the category Best Performance by a Lead Actor in a Musical, for their roles as Frank 'N Furter and Brad Majors respectively; for Jenny Stead in the category Best Lead Actress in a Musical for her role as Janet Weiss; for Andrew Laubscher as Riff Raff and for Adrian Galley as the Narrator in the category Best Supporting Actor in a Musical; for Daneel van der Walt and Dominique Maher for their roles as Magenta and Columbia respectively in the category Best Supporting Actress in a Musical; for Daniel Galloway for Best Lighting Design; and for Penny Simpson for Best Costume Design. The Rocky Horror Show, now on at Pieter Toerien's Theatre at Montecasino, has sold out its entire run in Johannesburg that closes on the 30th March. The Rocky Horror Show returns to the Fugard Theatre where it will play Tuesday to Sunday from 22 July to 2 November 2014. The production then returns to Joburg for a season from 14 November 2014 to 1 February 2015.

Athol Fugard and Riana Steyn's Die Laaste Karretjiegraf has been nominated for Best Set Design by Saul Radomsky and for Best Sound Design by James Webb.

The 49th annual Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards will be held at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town on Sunday 16 March at 6pm. Each award carries a R15 000 cash prize as well as a silver medal, making it one of the most coveted theatre awards in the industry. Irma Albers, Arts & Culture Controller of Distell, says the Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards is one of the flagship Arts & Culture initiatives supported by the Distell Foundation and is a premier event on the South African social calendar. Lara Bye will direct the awards ceremony that will feature a stellar entertainment line-up. Awards are presented in twenty different categories and the panel of judges make their decisions after having viewed almost a hundred productions hosted in several venues in and around Cape Town.The judges for the 2013 productions were Africa Melane, Coreen Lloyd, Dr Beverley Brommert, Dr Gabriël Botma, Gillian Mitchell, Herman van der Westhuizen, Jill Markram, Len Ashton, Mariana Malan, Marina Griebenow, Peter Tromp, Rone Arendse, Johan van Lill, Eugene Yiga and Tracey Saunders.

The 335-seater Fugard Theatre is located within the historic Sacks Futeran building in Cape Town’s District Six, with the renovated Congregational Church Hall in Caledon Street as its entrance. Construction of The Fugard Theatre was underwritten by its founding producer Eric Abraham. Athol Fugard is South Africa’s most significant and internationally acclaimed playwright. For over fifty years he has written soul-searing plays with roles for all South Africans which have moved audiences in South Africa and around the world to laughter and tears as they reflected the racism, barbarity and inhumanity of apartheid. Working with John Kani, the late Zakes Mokae and others he created iconic black characters whose narratives profoundly changed the way millions of people viewed apartheid. In his over thirty plays Athol Fugard champions truth and a fundamental universal humanity. In 2011 he received the ultimate recognition from the world’s most prestigious theatre community - a Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in Theatre. The Fugard Theatre is proud to bear his name and will honour him by providing a crucible of creativity and beacon of humanity for all South Africans.
