Four gruelling rounds await competitors at the first UNISA International Flute and Clarinet competition

The First Unisa International Flute and Clarinet Competition commences on Sunday 2 February 2014. The competition takes place in the ZK Matthews Great Hall on the Unisa Muckleneuk Campus and all rounds are open to the public.

The competitors and adjudicators will be introduced at the opening ceremony at 19:00 on Sunday 2 February. The opening ceremony will include a performance by the world famous Soweto String Quartet.

Entry is free for the opening ceremony.

The competitors will each receive two opportunities to impress the panel of international adjudicators: The first elimination will only take place after Round 2.

Round 1 takes place on 3 and 4 February with a morning session at 10:00, an afternoon session at 14:00 and an evening session at 19:00 each day.

Round 2 will take place on 6 and 7 February with similar sessions as Round 1.

Tickets for Rounds 1 and 2 are sold only at the door and cost R30 per session for adults and R20 per session for students and pensioners. A day ticket is also available at R70.

After the first elimination following Round 2 twelve semi-finalists will perform an hour-long recital during Round 3 on 9, 10 and 11 February.

During Round 3 there will be only two sessions per day at 14:00 and 19:00. Tickets are sold only at the door and cost R45 per session for adults and R35 per session for students and pensioners.

A day ticket for Round 3 will cost R70.

The final round will take place on 14 and 15 February. Six finalists will perform a full concerto with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra directed by the British conductor Julian Clayton.
