Title: Roots and Routes. Karretjie People of the Great Karoo. The marginalisation of a South African First People.
Publisher: Unisa Press

The lives of a previously “invisible” and forgotten “first people” of South Africa come to the fore in this carefully researched study. The “Karretjie People” (Donkey Cart People) of the Great Karoo are direct descendants of the /Xam (San/Bushmen), who were the earliest inhabitants of much of the Karoo interior. Today, as itinerant sheep-shearers, the Karretjie People roam the arid expanses of the Karoo in their donkey carts in search of possible shearing opportunities, sleeping over on the roadside in their make-shift overnight shelters. This unique study is the result of several decades of original research into the lives and community of these gypsy-like wanderers, and highlights the plight of this marginalised South African community, “poorest of the poor”.

Nick Norman het gesels oor Geological Journeys: A Traveller’s Guide to South Africa’s Rocks and Landforms.

Title: Geological Journeys: A Traveller’s Guide to South Africa’s Rocks and Landforms
Publisher: Struik (now Random House Struik)

Geological Journeys aimed to fill the gap that had existed in the magnificent spread of natural history guide books in South Africa. The book, published in 2006 and written by geologists Gavin Whitfield and Nick Norman, helps interested lay people to understand the formations in a road cutting, or the peculiar land surface or ridge of rock they see as they travel. It covers the metropolitan areas of Johannesburg-Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban, the main national highways and the tourist destinations of the great escarpment in Mpumalanga, the KZN Drakensberg and the Little Karoo. A companion volume covering the lesser travelled routes is in preparation.

Helene Smuts het gesels oor Africa meets Africa: Pathways through the Interior.

Doreen Atkinson het gesels oor haar eie boek, A Most Awful Excitement: The Boer War Diary of Gerrit Sem of Philippolis, sowel as oor boeke in Beth Hatefutsoth se reeks Jewish Life in the South African Communities.

Title: Sonic Spaces of the Karoo: The Sacred Music of a South African Coloured Community

Marie Jorritsma is a senior lecturer in music at the University of the Witwatersrand. Her book Sonic Spaces of the Karoo is the first full-length study of coloured people’s Christian religious music in the Karoo.

Sydda Essop het gesels oor haar kookboek Karoo Kitchen | Karoo Kombuis.

Title: Karoo Kitchen | Karoo Kombuis
Publisher: Quivertree

Karoo Kitchen | Karoo Kombuis pays homage to a rich, cultural interdependency without turning a blind eye to the isolation, political turmoil, abject poverty, socio-economic conditions and harsh climate of the region. More than 78 (mostly self-taught) cooks and healers aged from 23 to 95 were interviewed, all from different cultural corners of the region. They share their heartfelt stories of personal challenges and triumph and most precious family recipes. This is a very successful collaborative creation of publishers Quivertree, Libby Doyle and Craig Fraser. Editors: Johan van Zyl and Lin Murray; translator: Elsa Silke.

Chris Marais het gesels oor Karoo Keepsakes.
