Exit Strategy

I'm struggling to string the right words together to explain
how I'm feeling at this moment, it isn't pain
It isn't resentment, it isn't disappointment
It's more than that, this is a war
A battle that will take both of our lives
Except there are no medals and pride at the end of it all
Just two battered hearts
weakened by the deadly blows of our actions and our words
You don't know what you want and I only want one thing
the perfect recipe for a train wreck romance

You said what I wanted to hear and made some promises you didn't mean
and I tied a noose around every verb and hung myself on it
I tried to show you how much I truly loved you, but I ended up scaring you away
Who writes the rules? Where's the instructions to having a perfect relationship?
There are none, because there isn't a perfect relationship
As soon as something bothers you, you take the easy way out
Leaving the victim stranded and disorientated by what just happened

That's how you left me, without an explanation
One day you declare your undying love to me
the next I don't even exist in your eyes anymore
I was on the top of the world with you by my side
now I'm standing outside the window just watching my life collapse before my eyes
I'm going to throw myself away just like you threw me away
If I see a grenade in the middle of the battlefield
I'll jump on it, I'll eat it if I have to
Maybe people will think I'm a hero then

But desperate times call for desperate measures
and though my love for you is undeniable, yours isn't
I can't always be second best, a backup plan just in case your original didn't work out
I'm grateful for the smiles, the good times, the lies
But this is over, I'm throwing in the towel on us
I'm raising the white flag, I'm walking away from this fight
with nothing but a heavy heart and a little bit of pride
If somehow, someday, you’ve figured out who you are
and what you want in life and our paths happen to cross again
maybe we can declare war on each other again
But until then I'm only after peace
